RUBBER JAW

What makes music so important to you?

Music, like any art form, gives you the ability to express yourself and Rubber Jaw is a way for us all to explore our own artistic avenues.

You have very high energy when on stage , what’s the best thing about performing?

Actually getting our music out there, we haven’t released anything, which is quite cool as it forces people to come see you to hear your music. We record and produce all of our music ourselves and so the live performances are often the first time anyone outside the band has heard the music, which is great for feedback. The energy comes from the fact that we are cooped up in our garage for hours on end.

How does music make you feel / has it ever been your therapy ?

It’s therapy and cause for therapy.

How did ‘Rubber Jaw’ begin ?

Micheal and I met at primary school and have always been good mates. We were in a summer break between 2nd and 3rd year at Uni and we had started meeting occasionally to do music then I can’t even remember the track but we were listening to this tune that we’d done and decided that we should give this our entire attention. Archie saw a video of us on Facebook and it just so happened that we were looking to add a drummer to our set up and so Rubber Jaw was formed.

You have quite a distinctive sound, where did the inspiration for that come from?

It’s just sort of what came out when we (Ross and Michael) started writing. We try to make Ross’ guitar sound anything like a guitar. We’ve always been a fan of big sounds, we admire bands like Arcade Fire, St Vincent, Districts…

Name your top 5 grunge songs

This is too hard. Would it be bad for them all to be Nirvana? Nirvana are so influential. A top 5 is impossible… We’ve been recently listening to Melvins after watching a video on their producers Sylvia Massey and Toshi Kasai. Mudhoney are great as well… Would you class Smashing Pumpkins as grunge? They are great songwriters… This is impossible.
