Where did your inspiration for your upcoming EP come from?
Part of the inspiration for the E.P came from a place of desire to play different roles within each of the 4 tracks. I guess you could say that the underlying theme for 'Face Like Thunder' is trying to convey theatrical female perspective. Like all women I am proudly layered and I can be dominating, witchy (River), codependent, romantic (Venus), whimsical, dark (Automatic) and I can also really struggle with life somedays, and kick its ass on others (War Child). We are all such fabulous contradictions and thats why I called it 'Face Like Thunder' - because we are lead to believe that this phrase is such an insult yet I think that it's a big fat complement and f*ck anyone who tells me to smile.

What makes music so important to you and why?
Music takes me to places in my minds eye; places that I could never get to on my own. It sums up situations for me and allows me to visit memories and simply be nostalgic. I think that whole spiritual side of it is big to me and wraps me up when I need it. Being someone with a pretty diverse taste, I also think it's important to me in terms of sense of self. It helps me to stay constantly aware that inside and outside of music, we're all such complex creatures and that we should not be put in a box or divided. In my case I imagine each of my favourite artists as a different part of my personality and each one is just as loved and celebrated. Emo, electronic, classical, gothic, pop, disco, heavy metal; you name it I'll love it. Minus folk music, sorry folk music.
What is it like being a woman in music, do you think you’re taken seriously ?
I haven't had any experiences that have made me consider my sex as of yet, in a way of it negatively impacting my experience. I have a team of dudes around me, my producers, and band members are all male and theres nothing but shared respect and friendship there. I'm a generally playful character so I don't take myself too seriously as a person either and that is extended to my relationship with making music and performing, because it is to be 'played' not 'worked' after all (thank you Alan Watts). I was honoured to be likened to Lene Lovich and Kate Bush by Melita on my first BBC play. These are two totally badass female artists who I look up to and who choose to be masculine, feminine, artsy, sensual, punk and anything else they wanna be when they wanna be it. That sort of comparison makes me feel like I'm being taken seriously, yeah.

What has it felt like having your song ‘Automatic’ played across BBC radio?
It's felt bloody great. Melita Dennett played 'Automatic' on BBC Introducing in the South first off and that lead to me being picked as featured artist the following evening. It was the most dreamy surprise in a time where we don't have much to look forward to and it pushed me to blow the cobwebs off and get peppy again! The support from people texting in was really overwhelming and I was able to listen to the track again through fresh ears. It was a beautiful thing to watch the ball roll all the way to the Tom Robinson show on BBC Radio 6 too, I still can't believe that one. I'm glad that Automatic was the first of my songs to make it onto national radio because it's the zestiest track on the E.P and I think we all need a bit of 'tongue in cheek' right now. I've had my hands on this body of work for over a year so the songs are very much a part of me and I'm stoked that the BBC are backing my babies. Its definitely increased my prosecco intake, lets just say that.

How does music make you feel and has it ever been your therapy?
I'm about as emotional as you get, I cry at anything and everything. Music makes me cry a lot. I'm not just talking about sad songs. If a song blows me away, and puts my hair up on end I'ma cry. I'd say that in this way it is purely therapeutic. I fall in love with artists and albums and whoever my obsession is that week will be endless therapy for me. I can find it in all sorts of places, from Peaches to Limp Bizkit, System Of A Down to Kate Bush, T.Rex to Bat For Lashes, dependant on what my soul needs. I do, however, also have days where I want to be in complete silence or will just listen to podcasts and want a little break from music... Sacrilege I know.
