GARRY JOHN KANE

What makes music so important to you ?

I have never thought about it as it’s been my job / passion for 25 years. It’s always been there since my ears first heard my dads Sinatra records and my mums Beloved Elvis Records. My two older brothers pat and greg introduced me to the current music around 1980 so I became a 2-Tone / Punk fan and still am. Music has been important in shaping my social conscious and politics as well. Also most of my friends still go to gigs with me so that’s important to get you through life through music

How did you start playing with the proclaimers?

A friend of mine (Ross Mcfarlane) was drumming with the Proclaimers around 2003 and the bass player had to leave due to family commitments. I was just off the road after 2 years with Marianne Faithfull and had met the band backstage and we all got on. Right place right Time I suppose, but I’m glad it happened that way. Been a riot ever since: 27 MAY 15:57

How did Button Up Records start ?

Simple really had an album to bring out “no dancin on the tables” 2007 with my own band Button Up and wanted to go alone to see how it all worked. Since then I’ve had 22 releases either singles eps and albums. I decided to release other bands and now have The Bar Dogs, Toy Tin Soldier and latest Daniel Meade - When was the Last Time” album out 1st May 2018. I release records on cd and vinyl and upload to iTunes Spotify etc. It’s been successful so far and I love doing it all.

Has music ever been your therapy? / How does it make you feel?

I think Music has many values to everyday life so I suppose it is therapy to most. Each personal mood makes you go for a certain song to make you feel better or escape from any problems you have. It’s a wonderful happening when music grips you like that, truly unique.

What’s been your highlight of touring with the proclaimers ?

There’s been a few over last 15 years but gig wise then last T in the Park 2016 was fantastic in a ramped Tent and the noise was deafening. Also got to play a sold out Sydney opera house on last tour. That was a real special moment for the whole band and crew. I have been lucky to record a few albums down at the famous Rockfield in wales and work with great producers. Dave Eringa has produced our last two album latest getting released August 2018. What a joy to work with I’m lucky with that. I also got to be on a Xmas top the pops special 2007 miming to “I’m gonna be” 500 Miles. Defo one off the bucket list.
